Driving a VW Santana in China, with no Licence... Driving a VW Santana in China, with no Licence...

Video duration: 497 seconds

International Driving Permits are not accepted in China, so a local licence must be obtained... or so they thought. I was itching for a drive, but don't have time to waste on red tape, so I just stayed on the country roads. This 70's design Santana is still being built new in China and is one of the top sellers.

Video duration: 42 seconds

Large-ish car, 4-spd manual and only a 1.6L - not a very fast car... but fast enough for Chinese roads! Then again, with no licence to lose, who cares.

Interesting vehicle which shares that engine with the Citroen SM.

Due to the geometry of the rear suspension (and worn dampers), carefully timed applications of the hand brake causes this car to gain some considerable ground clearance.

Harking back to 1984, one realises how out-dated these old things were compared to the Fairlane's and LTD's of the era - so that's why it needed to be taught a lesson...

Quite a tidy old girl that was owned by an elderly couple - so after years of being tootled around it required some 'loosening up'...

This little Jeep still didn't learn it's lesson, so a few happenin' moves on the road soon had it sorted.

Lovely example of a SWB W140. Although the 6-cylinder versions are certainly not a race car, they are just a splendid old bus to waft around in.

Lots of traction means less fun. This little Jeep needed to be taught a lesson anyway - who would drive one of these on the road as transport?

Took this 325 for a drive - looks quite striking in Dakar Yellow, but the driving experience was a bit disappointing. The ride was overly jiggly, so to own this car would mean regular trips to the chiropractor...

Video duration: 180 seconds

Lovely example of Audi's flagship - just going for a short drive. With a reasonable amount of space for a mid-size, a creamy V8 and a rather absorbent ride, this is quite a desirable Audi. Shame it's silver with grey...

Lovely example of a late Shadow 1, this vehicle currently sharing in daily transportation needs. With a particularly soft ride quality, she exhibits noticeable frontal-lift on take off and provides occupants with that essential quality for any proper car - float.

BMW 318 with defective front shock absorbers. BMW 318 with defective front shock absorbers.

Video duration: 48 seconds

In addition to non-functioning front dampers, the transmission had entered into 'fail-safe' mode - thus only reverse, 2nd and 3rd gears are enabled. Even if these problems did not exist, the car does not seem to have any redeeming features - why would anyone use these as transport?
