Galveston police made a record 24-pound codeine seizure from a mid-island residence on Friday, May, 18, 2012, which is believed to be the largest confiscation of codeine in the department's history. Barney Oldham of Galveston wants to alert residents in the 9300 block of Seawall Boulevard that his dog was attacked by a pit bull that came from a homeless camp at an old, crumbling, brick building that apparently once housed a pump house. Police evicted the squatters. The city contacted the property owner, who promised to rectify the problem structure.

A contractor pressure washing a roof was critically hurt after one of the metal panels gave way. He fell 60 feet at Malin International Ship Repair & Drydock, 320 77th St., in Galveston, police said. An ambulance rushed the man to the University of Texas Medical Branch. His name and condition weren't known.

Galveston County leaders sold two steam-power hammers for scrap metal, and the demolition started late last week. The hammers were a fixture in front of the Justice Center for the last eight years or so, dominating the open field next to Broadway. They were part of the Cotton Concentration Co. warehouse, which was built in 1910 at 54th and Ball streets.
