Given the right temperature and wind and an abundance of fuel, a fire whirl can occur. These vortexes of flame are unpredictable and carry more heat than your average blaze, moving from 5 to 10 mph. The funnels can be as small as a foot high or as big as an F5 Kansas twister.

For the Faire, the Brooklyn-based Madagascar Institute arts combine brought back their Jet Ponies ride?a pulse jet-powered steam punk carousel that could, as the signs warn would-be riders, "kill you". We first saw Jet Ponies last year at the Gadgetoff gathering of inventors, and were happy to see it return with few modifications, including a new insurance-pleasing chest harness.
